XSearch

XSearch is a free file search tool designed to provide more advanced search capabilities than the default Windows Search. It operates without the use of an indexing service, meaning it does not continuously scan files in the background, and instead performs searches only when needed. XSearch appeals to users who prefer classic, on-demand searching with greater control over search parameters and file operations.

The tool allows searching for files by name, size, date, time, and by specific words. Users can specify exact file sizes in bytes, KB, MB, or GB, and define size or date ranges using logical operators. Date and time searches can be based on created, modified, or last accessed attributes, with the ability to search by date, time, or both. XSearch supports multiple word and filename search options, including matching any, all, exact phrases, or excluding specific terms. It also enables the use of wildcard characters and regular expressions for both filename and word matching, and offers case-sensitive search options. The tool automatically detects and matches Unicode, UTF-8, and ANSI encodings when searching within files.

A notable feature is XSearch’s HexView tool, which allows users to view file contents in hexadecimal format, search for words or hex bytes, and copy selected bytes. HexView is capable of handling very large files efficiently and supports vertical selection mode. XSearch also supports searching for hexadecimal values directly within files.

For file management, XSearch enhances shell operations by accurately calculating the total size and number of files in search results, even when handling large selections or when files and their parent folders are included together. It allows opening containing folders for multiple selected items, a capability not offered by Windows Search. The application can be used without installation or configuration, making it easy to run directly as needed. XSearch is distributed as free software, with the option for users to support development through donations.
