Xpather

Xpather is a browser extension designed to assist users in generating and evaluating XPath expressions for web elements. It addresses the challenge of quickly finding accurate and unique XPath selectors by allowing users to pick any element on a web page and automatically generating up to seven distinct XPath strategies, each ranked by uniqueness. The tool is suitable for anyone working with XPath, such as developers, testers, or automation engineers who need to identify web elements efficiently.

The extension features a smart element picker that highlights elements in real time when the user holds the Alt key and hovers over the page. Capturing a target element is as simple as an Alt+click or using the toolbar button. Once an element is selected, Xpather generates XPath variants based on factors like ID, data-attributes, text content, class, attribute, optimized shortest path, and absolute path. Each strategy is presented in a single panel, with the best match marked for convenience. Users can review the matches in a live DOM tree, which provides a visual hierarchy of matched elements, including tag names, attributes, and text content. Any XPath can be copied to the clipboard with a single click for use in testing frameworks, scrapers, or browser consoles.

Xpather also offers live XPath evaluation, enabling users to type any XPath expression and instantly see how many elements it matches, along with a structured DOM tree preview. The extension supports both light and dark themes, following system preferences or allowing manual selection to ensure comfort in any environment. It operates entirely locally within the browser, with zero telemetry, no network requests, and no data collection or analytics, emphasizing user privacy.

The extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browsers. Xpather is free to use and fully open source, released under the MIT license. Its source code is accessible on GitHub, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and privacy.
