Trustmux enables users to monitor and interact with their tmux or Byobu terminal sessions from any browser, including mobile devices, using a private Tailscale network connection. Designed to provide secure, point-to-point access without relying on relay servers or cloud services, Trustmux ensures that all data remains private and is protected with TLS encryption.
The tool supports real-time streaming of terminal output from any tmux or Byobu pane, with full ANSI color rendering for an accurate display. Users can scroll back through session history by swiping up on their device and view the byobu status line, which reflects details such as operating system distribution, uptime, CPU usage, memory, load, and clock, mirroring the workstation’s display. Trustmux also allows users to manage sessions directly from their phone, including creating new panes, windows, or sessions, stepping through live panes, and renaming them as needed.
Pairing Trustmux with a device is streamlined and does not require SSH keys, certificates, or complex configuration. Users simply run a pairing command on their workstation and enter a single-use, six-digit code that expires in 60 seconds. Long-lived authentication tokens are stored locally on the user’s devices and are never transmitted elsewhere, further enhancing privacy and security.
Trustmux is available for installation via Ubuntu PPA, PyPI, and Homebrew, and can be used as a progressive web app on Android devices. The tool is suited for individuals who need remote, secure, and convenient access to their terminal sessions, particularly those who use tmux or Byobu in their workflows and rely on Tailscale for private networking.
