Squishify

Squishify is a WordPress plugin that performs image optimization in the browser before upload. It addresses the common issue where standard image plugins process files only after they have been transferred to the server and stored, consuming bandwidth and disk space with full-size originals.

The plugin provides a dedicated editor inside the wp-admin interface. Users drag a batch of images into this editor and adjust parameters with live before-and-after comparison. Supported operations include changing format, quality, effort level, and resize dimensions for each image individually. Encoding relies on real libraries compiled to WebAssembly: libavif for AVIF, libwebp for WebP, MozJPEG for JPEG, and Oxipng for PNG. Once adjustments are complete, the optimized files are uploaded directly to the WordPress Media Library.

Squishify operates entirely on the user's machine. It requires no cloud API, maintains no credits or quotas, and keeps images private until the moment of upload. The approach contrasts with post-upload optimization by ensuring only processed versions reach the site.

It is delivered as a free plugin available through the official WordPress.org directory. Installation follows standard WordPress procedures, with the editor appearing directly in the administration area.
