Speed Reader

Speed Reader is an app designed to help users read text more quickly by utilizing rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) and other focused reading modes. The tool addresses the challenge of reading efficiency and comprehension by offering multiple ways to load and present text, making it suitable for a range of reading materials and personal preferences.

The app supports three distinct reading modes: Flash, which displays one word at a time with optimal recognition point (ORP) highlighting; Scroll, which presents text in a continuous horizontal flow; and Vertical Scroll, which shows text line by line for greater context. Users can adjust their reading speed from 100 to 1500 words per minute using a slider, and can fine-tune the reading experience with settings for theme, font, interface language, and pause behavior for punctuation and long words. The tool is designed to accommodate different types of content and reading goals, such as speed training, comprehension, or natural flow.

Text can be loaded into Speed Reader through a variety of input methods, including pasting from the clipboard, importing PDF, DOCX, or DOC files, scanning printed text with the device camera, or sending content via a share extension from other apps. When a URL is pasted, the app attempts to extract the main article text, filtering out navigation and extraneous page elements. The app also features automatic text cleanup for clarity during fast presentation.

On devices where Apple Intelligence is available, Speed Reader provides on-device AI-powered summarization and translation into 15 languages, without sending content to external servers. The reading library stores history, favorites, recent texts, and related metadata such as title, source, reading time, and average speed. Users can search, organize, and manually save texts within the library, and can choose to disable history for privacy. The interface supports gestures like tap-to-start or pause, swipe navigation for reviewing text, and live adjustment of reading speed. The app emphasizes privacy-friendly design and flexible, user-centered controls.
