Silent Editor

Silent Editor is a browser-based PDF editing tool designed with a privacy-first approach. It allows users to edit, sign, merge, and annotate PDF documents directly in their web browser without uploading files to any server. All processing occurs locally on the user's device, ensuring that documents never leave the device and that no data is stored or processed remotely. This architecture is enforced through client-side JavaScript and WebAssembly, with the privacy boundary maintained by code-level network restrictions.

The platform offers a comprehensive set of PDF editing features. Users can select and replace existing text, add notes and annotations, and benefit from font matching to preserve the original document's appearance. Electronic signatures can be placed with signer names, date stamps, and custom text, and can be moved or removed before exporting. Silent Editor supports various page operations such as inserting blank pages, importing from other PDFs, duplicating, deleting, and reordering pages, with automatic remapping of annotations when pages are moved. Additional tools include the ability to highlight text regions, draw rectangular shapes for emphasis or redaction, and customize colors and opacity.

For exporting, the tool provides two options: Vector export, which preserves selectable text and produces compact files, and Visual Perfect export, which renders each page as a high-resolution image for precise layout fidelity. Users can upload custom images as watermarks and apply them to one or all pages, adjusting opacity, scale, and position. Local OCR text recognition is available to extract selectable text from scanned or image-based PDFs, making these documents editable and searchable without any server-side processing.

Silent Editor is accessible without account creation, software installation, or browser extensions, and works offline after the initial load. It supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile devices. The tool is free to use for core editing features, with a daily limit, while premium features and unlimited use are available through optional registration. During the open beta, registered users have access to premium features at no cost. js, pdf-lib, and React, and is delivered via Cloudflare Pages with enforced Content Security Policy for added security.
