HyperSwitcher

HyperSwitcher is a macOS utility designed to streamline app and window switching by transforming the Caps Lock key into a customizable shortcut hub. Instead of relying on the standard Cmd-Tab interface, which dynamically rearranges apps and can slow down repetitive switching, HyperSwitcher allows users to assign specific keys to their most-used applications. By pressing Caps Lock (repurposed as the "Hyper" key) plus a designated letter, users can instantly jump to a chosen app, and pressing the same shortcut again cycles through that app’s open windows on the display under the mouse pointer. The tool focuses on repeatable, muscle-memory shortcuts for users who frequently switch between a set of core applications, such as editors, browsers, messaging tools, terminals, or note apps. It is not intended for browsing every open window but rather for quick, direct access to familiar apps and their windows. HyperSwitcher also includes features such as a window picker (activated by holding an app shortcut), support for minimized windows, and the ability to prompt an app to create or reveal a window if none are open. The software is display-aware, choosing or cycling windows based on the monitor under the cursor. For workspace organization, HyperSwitcher offers keyboard-driven window layout tools. Users can arrange windows into defined regions using arrow keys, set gaps between windows and screen edges, move windows between monitors, and preserve window sizes when moving. Layouts in progress are remembered, and the tool avoids overlapping previously placed windows. Shortcut management features include searching for apps, assigning keys, viewing conflicts, and importing or exporting shortcut configurations as JSON files. HyperSwitcher operates as a menu bar utility that can start at login and remain out of the Dock. All shortcuts, layouts, and settings are stored locally on the Mac, with no cloud sync, account creation, or personal tracking. The tool only requests the macOS permissions necessary for window management. It requires macOS 15 or later and can be installed via direct download or Homebrew. The application is available for free with limited app shortcuts and Quick Layout access; a one-time payment unlocks unlimited features for use on up to three devices.
