OpenPencil

OpenPencil is an open-source design editor that provides compatibility with Figma files and offers a programmable environment for design and automation tasks. fig files natively and supports copy and paste operations between Figma and OpenPencil. The tool uses a Kiwi binary codec to maintain round-trip fidelity when handling Figma files, addressing the need for accurate and seamless file interchange in design workflows.

OpenPencil also serves as a toolkit, allowing developers to build custom editing surfaces using its Vue SDK, embed its capabilities into other products, or create workflow-specific editors based on its core engine.

AI features are integrated directly into the platform, with a built-in chat interface that provides access to 90 tools for creating shapes, setting styles, managing layouts, and analyzing design tokens. The tool supports connections to MCP servers for integrations with Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf, further enhancing its automation and analysis capabilities.

OpenPencil offers real-time collaboration through peer-to-peer (P2P) connections using WebRTC, enabling users to share a link and edit together with live cursors and follow mode, all without the need for a central server. The application can be used as a desktop app, available via Homebrew at approximately 7 MB, or as a web app. It does not require an account, server, or internet connection for local use. OpenPencil is released under the MIT License, allowing users to read and modify all aspects of the editor, engine, file codec, and CLI.
