MaxtDesign PDF Viewer is a free and open-source WordPress plugin designed to provide fast, accessible PDF embedding and viewing for WordPress websites. It addresses performance and usability challenges by offering instant server-generated WebP previews of PDFs, ensuring that pages load quickly with minimal JavaScript and no layout shift. The plugin is aimed at WordPress site owners and developers seeking a streamlined, accessible way to display PDFs without impacting page performance or accessibility standards.

A key feature of the tool is its use of server-side preview generation: when a PDF is uploaded, the first page is automatically converted to an optimized WebP image using ImageMagick, which displays instantly on the page. js viewer is loaded only on demand—when the user clicks, scrolls to the embed, or immediately, based on configurable load behaviors. This approach keeps the initial JavaScript payload under 10KB and guarantees zero cumulative layout shift (CLS) by reserving space with CSS aspect-ratio before content loads. The toolbar within the viewer is customizable for each embed, allowing toggling of download, print, and fullscreen options.

MaxtDesign PDF Viewer supports both the Gutenberg block editor, with live previews in the editor itself, and classic editor or page builders via a shortcode ([pdf_viewer id="123"]). Accessibility is a central focus, with keyboard navigation, ARIA labels, screen reader announcements, and mobile touch gestures for navigation and zoom. The plugin also provides a bulk processing tool for generating previews for existing media library PDFs, as well as REST API endpoints for PDF information and preview processing. Preview quality can be adjusted with presets for low, medium, or high resolution.
