MCP Packet Tracer is an open-source server designed to automate the creation of Cisco Packet Tracer network labs using artificial intelligence. By allowing users to describe their desired network in plain English, the platform generates complete topologies—including devices, cabling, IP addressing, routing protocols, and configurations—without requiring knowledge of specific network commands. The tool is positioned for those building and testing network scenarios, such as educators, engineers, and students working with Cisco Packet Tracer workflows.
The platform supports 74 verified device models, including a range of routers (such as ISR4321, ISR4331, 2911, and more), Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches, end devices (PCs, laptops, servers, tablets, smartphones, printers, TVs, VoIP phones), security appliances (ASA 5505, ASA 5506-X), wireless devices, WAN/cloud components, and various other network hardware. 2 and above, ensuring accurate port definitions and realistic lab setups. The server automatically selects appropriate cable types for each connection—such as straight, cross, serial, fiber, console, and wireless—eliminating manual configuration of physical links.
Routing and network automation features are built in, with support for OSPF, EIGRP, static, and RIP routing protocols. The tool generates IP addressing schemes, configures DHCP pools, and applies routing configurations automatically based on the described topology. Expansion modules for additional ports, such as serial WAN cards and Ethernet switch modules, are installed as needed by the server to match the network requirements. Users can start from one of nine built-in templates (such as single LAN, multi-LAN, hub and spoke, branch office, or custom) or construct fully custom topologies from scratch.
MCP Packet Tracer is delivered as a Python-based MCP server that works with any compatible MCP client, including Claude Code and VS Code/Copilot integrations. 11 or higher, and the platform can be set up using standard Python package management tools. The project is distributed under the MIT License and is not affiliated with Cisco Systems, Inc.
