GitHub Spark

GitHub Spark is an AI-powered tool developed by GitHub Next for creating and sharing personalized micro apps known as sparks. It addresses the difficulty of building short-lived or niche applications by allowing users to generate software tailored to individual preferences and workflows without writing or deploying code. The platform makes software personalization comparable to customizing a development environment and is now in public preview.

It combines three integrated components: a natural language-based editor for describing and iteratively refining ideas, a managed runtime environment that hosts the apps and supplies data storage, theming, and access to large language models, and a progressive web app-enabled dashboard for managing and launching sparks from desktop and mobile devices. The editor supports interactive previews that run descriptions immediately, revision variants that produce multiple alternatives, automatic history, and model selection. This design enables users to begin with a basic concept and build complexity through assisted exploration and visual feedback.

Sparks follow a Unix-inspired philosophy of performing one task well for the specific duration of usefulness to the creator. Examples created by the team include an allowance tracker for children that generates celebratory messages with a large language model and supports read-only or read-write sharing with parents, an animated vehicle world built by a six-year-old, a weekly karaoke night tracker, a maps app that produces fun descriptions of cities, and a custom Hacker News client that summarizes comment threads. Users can share sparks with others, granting read-only or read-write permissions, after which recipients may use, favorite, or remix them.

The tool is delivered as a web-based service accessible on both desktop and mobile. It was created by Devon Rifkin, Terkel Gjervig, Cole Bemis, and Alice Li and published in October 2024.
