The platform equips AI coding agents with tools to search source code, access package documentation, inspect metadata, review changelogs, check for vulnerabilities, analyze dependency graphs, and find real implementation examples. Specific features include code navigation with search and grep capabilities, reading exact line ranges across repositories, accessing hosted documentation, and inspecting package dependencies and version histories. GitHits also supports the discovery of prior art and implementation patterns from repositories, issues, discussions, and pull requests, helping agents ground their outputs in established ecosystem conventions.

Its index covers code files, symbols, abstract syntax trees, imports, exports, version histories, markdown and HTML documentation, dependency relations, security advisories, changelogs, release notes, and diffs. The platform is accessible as an application or via a command-line interface through the 'npx githits@latest init' command, making it adaptable for integration into agent workflows.
