Family Tree Maker (FTM) is genealogy software designed to help users discover, build, and preserve their family history. Available for both Mac and Windows, it offers tools for creating and managing family trees, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced genealogists. The software provides intuitive navigation, tree-building capabilities, and integrated web searching to simplify the process of growing a family tree.

FTM includes features such as single-click synchronization with Ancestry.com and hints from both Ancestry and FamilySearch, aiding users in uncovering new information about their ancestors. The Connect workspace allows real-time collaboration, enabling relatives to fact-check the tree and add Relative Hint sticky notes through the free FTM Connect mobile app, available for Apple and Android devices. Guest Access, enabled by TreeVault, lets users invite relatives to view the tree and access additional details such as relationships, person and research notes, and web links. The Connect workspace also tracks the progress of collaborating relatives.

The Turn Back Time feature records every change made to the family tree, allowing users to roll back up to 5,000 changes, which is useful for correcting mistakes during tree editing, merging, or syncing operations. The Easy on the Eyes feature temporarily enlarges areas of the People workspace to reduce eye strain. For photo management, FTM offers Photo Darkroom tools that help repair and restore old or damaged family photos, including cropping and removing dust and scratches, while preserving the original image.

FTM integrates with the upcoming AlbumWALK mobile app, which enables users to record and embed audio memories in photos using SoundSpot technology. These interactive talking photos can be transferred to Family Tree Maker and played within a built-in AlbumWALK player. AlbumWALK also provides cloud backup for photos and albums through TreeVault.
