DecentPaste is a cross-platform universal clipboard application designed to securely synchronize text clipboard content across multiple devices on the same local network. It addresses the need for seamless, private clipboard sharing without relying on cloud servers or external intermediaries. The tool is intended for users who want to copy text, URLs, code snippets, or other text-based content on one device and instantly paste it on another, whether on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS.

Security and privacy are central to DecentPaste's design. All clipboard data is encrypted end-to-end using AES-256-GCM encryption before it leaves a device. The encryption keys are established through X25519 elliptic-curve Diffie-Hellman key exchange during device pairing, ensuring that the shared secret is never transmitted over the network. Pairing devices is accomplished with a simple 6-digit PIN, and connections are cryptographically verified. DecentPaste operates exclusively over a local network using peer-to-peer communication facilitated by libp2p, with device discovery handled by mDNS (multicast DNS). This approach means clipboard data never leaves the user's network, and there are no cloud servers or accounts involved.
