cwmail is a terminal-based email client designed for users who prefer managing IMAP mailboxes from the command line. It distinguishes itself by offering AI-drafted reply functionality powered by the DeepSeek V4 Pro model, enabling users to generate contextual reply drafts with a single keypress and edit them before sending. This tool is built using Go and the Bubbletea TUI framework, providing a full-screen, interactive interface for efficient email management.
The client supports multiple IMAP accounts simultaneously, including Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, and custom IMAP providers, with each account’s folders and unread counts displayed independently in the sidebar. HTML emails are rendered directly in the terminal, handling elements such as tables, lists, block quotes, links, charset translation, and HTML entity decoding. Inline images, including embedded and CID-referenced images, are displayed as half-block ANSI graphics in 24-bit color, provided the terminal supports true color. The tool also parses ICS calendar invites, rendering event details inline and supporting RSVP actions.
cwmail features fast folder navigation using Vim-style or arrow keys, and offers instant full-text search across subject, body, and sender fields by querying a local SQLite mirror. It maintains real-time inbox updates through IMAP IDLE push notifications, providing desktop alerts for new mail without polling. Threaded conversations are supported with RFC 5256-compliant sorting, and conversations can be collapsed or expanded for easier navigation. Drafts are automatically saved locally every few keystrokes, ensuring work is preserved even after crashes or accidental closures. Deleting messages moves them to Trash with an 8-second undo window, allowing for quick recovery from mistakes.
For automation and scripting, cwmail includes a CLI send mode that enables non-interactive message sending, suitable for integration into shell scripts, CI pipelines, or use by AI agents. Configuration is managed via JSON files, and credentials are stored in the operating system’s keyring. All user data, including the local mail mirror and drafts, is stored locally, and there is no dependency on any external service or SaaS platform. The tool is distributed as a pre-built binary for macOS (arm64/amd64) and Linux (amd64), and is not a hosted service.
