TokenMonitor is a browser extension designed to address performance slowdowns in long ChatGPT sessions on desktop browsers. It targets the issue where extended threads in ChatGPT can cause the browser interface to become sluggish—manifesting as input delays, slow scrolling, and general UI lag—well before reaching the model's hard context limits. By providing early warnings at around 34–36% of token usage, TokenMonitor enables users to recognize and address these browser-side degradations before they disrupt workflow and focus.

The extension operates entirely within the user's browser, ensuring that no chat content leaves the device. It features a live meter and panel that display full thread usage and risk zones, helping users monitor when their session is approaching the point where performance issues typically begin. TokenMonitor is particularly suited for users engaged in long coding or chat sessions in ChatGPT, where uninterrupted flow and responsiveness are important.

TokenMonitor is available for Chrome and Edge browsers on desktop platforms. It does not function on mobile devices, but provides a mechanism for mobile users to send the installation link to their desktop via QR code or copyable link. The extension is independent and not affiliated with OpenAI.
