Talisman

Talisman is a digital musical instrument designed for Android devices, allowing users to create music through thumb gestures on a touchscreen. The app is intended for absolute beginners, including those with no prior experience playing traditional instruments or those who have found such instruments inaccessible. By eliminating conventional elements like staves, chord charts, and memorized notes, Talisman enables users to make music simply by placing and moving their thumbs on the screen.

A key feature of Talisman is its library of "Souls," which are musical characters that alter the instrument's timbre, scale, reverb, and visual identity. Selecting a different Soul transforms both the sound and feel of the instrument, allowing the same gestures to produce a range of musical expressions, such as emulating a Japanese koto, a choir, or an ambient pad. The instrument also uses intelligent quantization to ensure that every note played fits within a beautiful scale, removing the possibility of playing wrong notes.

The app provides an expressive ribbon controlled by two thumbs, visual feedback through animated light patterns and particles, and haptic feedback on key notes. Talisman records users' initial sessions silently, giving them the option to listen back and save their favorite creations. It operates fully offline after installation, requires no user account, displays no ads, and includes no tracking or third-party analytics. The app is used in portrait mode and is designed to be held similarly to a handheld gaming device.

Talisman does not collect personal data, does not access the microphone or camera, and stores custom instrument configurations locally on the device. It aims to provide an accessible, engaging musical experience for anyone using an Android phone, focusing on discovery and self-expression through intuitive touch interaction.
