Stutter

f-droid.org·Education & learning

Stutter is a speed-reading application for Android that employs rapid serial visual presentation to display text one word at a time in a fixed position. The approach minimizes eye movement and maintains a consistent reading pace. Users supply content by pasting text, sharing from another application, or providing a public article URL from which readable content is extracted.

Reading speed and timing can be adjusted in detail, with separate controls for delays on long words, punctuation, numbers, and short words to produce a natural yet predictable rhythm. The application includes language-aware tokenization and hyphenation for long words across 18 supported languages. Appearance settings cover choice of fonts, text size, spacing, and colors. An optional flanker feature shows a preview fragment of the following word. The tool stores no reading history and performs no analytics, tracking, or data collection.

It is delivered as a free and open-source Android app through the F-Droid repository. The author is James Tomasino and the software is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only. Version 1.4.4 updates the target API level to Android 16 for compliance requirements. Installation through the F-Droid client is recommended over direct APK downloads to receive update notifications.
