Sit-In! is a browser extension designed as a form of digital protest in solidarity with tech workers, specifically former Facebook content moderators in Nairobi who organized a physical sit-in in 2023. The extension was developed in collaboration with these workers as they pursue a landmark legal case against Meta, aiming to highlight and confront exploitative working conditions faced by content moderators tasked with filtering harmful online material. By turning the act of browsing Meta’s platforms into a space for activism, Sit-In! extends the impact of the original sit-in to a global online audience.
Once installed on Firefox or Chrome browsers, Sit-In! automatically activates when the user visits Facebook or other Meta services. The extension blocks access to these platforms and overlays the page with statements from the former content moderators, sharing their experiences, demands, and personal stories. These overlays are visible only to the user and do not post or interact with the platforms themselves. Users can click on the statements to read full quotes, bringing greater visibility to the hidden labor behind content moderation and the systemic issues within Big Tech.
Sit-In! includes a participation counter in the browser toolbar, showing the number of users currently engaged in the digital sit-in. Clicking the extension’s icon directs users to the project’s website, where real-time participation is tracked anonymously. The extension offers customizable settings, allowing users to schedule when it is active by selecting specific days and times. By default, Sit-In! blocks Meta services at all times, but users can opt for scheduled involvement to tailor their participation. Personal settings are stored locally in the browser and are not sent to any server.
On designated Global Sit-In! Days—such as court hearing dates, International Workers’ Day, and the anniversary of the Nairobi sit-in—the extension becomes active for all participants, overriding individual schedules. These collective protest days cannot be disabled. Sit-In! serves individuals and organizations wishing to express solidarity with content moderators and advocate for fairer working conditions in the tech industry through a visible, nonviolent digital action.
In the Forums & communities space, Sit-In! takes a focused approach. It enables digital activism and solidarity with exploited tech workers through a browser extension. It is built as a consumer product for activists and supporters of tech worker rights. Sit-In! costs nothing to use. The product ships for the web and embeddable surfaces.
Sit-In! first shipped in 2025. Key capabilities include digital protest, browser extension, and community engagement. It exposes integrations via a public API.
