Paper

Paper is a journaling command-line tool for developers. It addresses the gap between tools that record what was shipped and the unrecorded reasoning, decisions, and context that later matter for reviews, promotion packets, and interviews.

The tool operates in the terminal with a single daily prompt. Typing the paper command opens an editor for that day's entry, followed by one or two follow-up questions that draw out reasoning rather than just tasks. A quick alternative command, paper log followed by a quoted string, appends a one-line entry without further interaction. All entries are stored as plain Markdown files on the local filesystem, making them directly searchable and greppable with ordinary command-line tools. The list subcommand displays past entries and opens any chosen file. Paper also maintains an internal memory of the user's work and background to provide context-aware follow-ups.

It is delivered as a Node.js package installed globally via npm. No account or external service is required. The software is free to use with no stated limits on writing entries.
