Prudent

Prudent is a desktop application designed to help individuals and families manage their personal finances through a journal-based approach. It provides an integrated environment for automating and understanding personal ledgers, offering tools to consolidate financial data from sources such as bank accounts, stocks, CPF, and properties. The application aims to give users clarity on their financial decisions and help them optimize their financial situation.

A key feature of Prudent is its integrated reporting system, which displays reports alongside the ledger editor within a resizable view. As users edit and save transactions or other entries in their text-based ledger, reports update automatically and immediately, eliminating the need to switch windows or re-enter commands. Prudent is built around the use of plain text Ledger files, which are compatible with the Ledger CLI tool and can be edited in any text editor. This approach provides flexibility, ease of backup, and control over accounting data.

The platform supports working with multiple commodities, allowing users to use any symbol, emoji, or word to denote different assets such as shares or currencies. Prudent enhances this capability with a commodity summary feature, enabling users to view reports converted to a single currency or displaying all involved currencies using a commodity switch. Additionally, it visualizes account balances in a tree structure, allowing users to explore financial details at various levels by expanding branches, which encourages a deeper understanding of their finances.

Prudent is available as a desktop application for macOS and is not a cloud-based service. Users retain control over their data, with all files stored locally on their computers. The application supports the use of version control tools like Git, encryption, and custom backup strategies, and allows for the creation and management of multiple Ledger files. Users can also import transactions into these text files using scripts, maintaining privacy and flexibility in their financial management.
