Progress Tab

Progress Tab is a browser extension designed to replace the default new tab page with a single, sourced fact about global trends each morning. Instead of presenting a news feed or a collection of links, it delivers one verified number with its original source and a brief explanation, focusing on how the world is changing in areas such as poverty, child mortality, and disease. The extension aims to recalibrate users' intuition about global progress by encouraging them to guess the answer before revealing the actual data, highlighting the common tendency to assume outcomes are worse than they are.

Each day, users are presented with a multiple-choice question related to a factual statistic, such as the percentage of people living in extreme poverty as of a specific year. After making a guess from three options, the correct answer is revealed, along with a link to the original source, which may include organizations like Our World in Data, the WHO, the UN, or the World Bank. This approach is intended to help users form a more accurate understanding of global issues, emphasizing accuracy over optimism by showing both the challenges and improvements in various aspects of life worldwide.

Progress Tab is private by design, requiring no account or login, and does not track personal history beyond the user's own device. It is free to use and can be added to Chrome, opening automatically on every new tab. The tool does not offer a feed or backlog of facts, focusing instead on a single daily interaction to gradually shift users' perceptions based on real-world data.
