openreq.app·API design, testing & docs

OpenReq is a free, open-source API client designed for building, testing, and sharing APIs with no usage limits or required accounts. It provides a self-hosted alternative to commercial API testing tools, supporting the full API lifecycle from request building to documentation sharing. The platform is suitable for developers and teams who need flexible deployment options and robust scripting capabilities for API development and testing.

Scripting is enabled through Python and JavaScript engines with a dedicated req API for assertions, variable management, and sending requests, along with AI-assisted script generation. Environments can be managed with variable isolation and secret value handling, allowing quick switching between development, test, and live contexts.

OpenReq includes code generation for turning requests into code snippets in cURL, Python, JavaScript (fetch and axios), Go, Java, C, and PHP. Its AI Collection Builder can parse API documentation or URLs to generate collections automatically, and the AI agent "George" assists with script writing, debugging, and test flow creation. AI features can run locally via Ollama integration, ensuring privacy. 0+, and cURL, and can export back to Postman format for workflow migration. Visual test flows are built using a drag-and-drop node graph, supporting HTTP requests, assertions, conditions, loops, and scripts, with real-time execution and reporting.

Delivery options include a standalone desktop app with local data storage, a desktop client that connects to a user-hosted server for team collaboration, and a self-hosted web version deployable via Docker or manual setup. OpenReq also provides a local proxy mode for testing internal APIs, a response visualizer with multiple viewing modes, DNS and ping tools for network diagnostics, and the ability to generate and share API documentation with optional password protection. The tool is fully free and open source, with no account or usage restrictions.
