LAUREN

LAUREN is described as a human intelligent smart home experience in which the creator, Lauren Lee McCarthy, physically visits participants' homes to install a collection of networked smart devices. These devices may include cameras, sensors, outlets, faucets, door locks, lights, and other electronic objects. Once installed, LAUREN remotely monitors the home 24/7 and controls the devices, aiming to anticipate and adapt to the resident's needs and desires, with the goal of understanding them as a person rather than simply responding as an algorithm would.

Interaction with LAUREN occurs both through direct voice commands, similar to established voice assistants, and through autonomous actions initiated by the system itself. The experience is designed to be interactive, with LAUREN learning and adapting to the participant's preferences, sometimes acting without explicit requests. Prospective participants are invited to sign up by submitting a video or written explanation of their interest, after which a follow-up conversation may be scheduled. The standard trial involves a three-day installation and performance in the participant's own home, during which LAUREN manages and observes the smart devices and routines.

In addition to in-home installations, LAUREN has offered special events, such as a one-night stay in an apartment in Los Angeles, where guests experience a sleepover and wake-up routine remotely assisted by LAUREN. The project is positioned as both a smart home system and a performance piece, with documentation and testimonials available. LAUREN was developed as part of the Sundance Institute’s New Frontier Residency Program, with support from the World Building Institute, Pigeon Hole Productions, Turner Broadcasting, and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

LAUREN is intended for individuals interested in exploring the boundaries of smart home technology, human interaction, and performance art. Participation is limited by the creator's availability, and there is no mention of a traditional commercial pricing or licensing model.
