CPEE

CPEE is a modular, service-oriented process execution engine designed for researchers, developers, and system administrators. Its primary aim is to offer a simple, lightweight alternative to existing process execution engines, while also providing enhanced capabilities. The platform is structured to support modularity in three main areas: execution languages, interaction protocols, and execution shaping. Specifically, CPEE supports execution languages such as BPEL, YAWL, and BPMN, and can interact using protocols including SOAP, REST, XMPP, MQTT, MODBUS, S7, and OPCUA. Execution shaping is achieved by allowing runtime ad-hoc changes and custom behavior through the addition of REST web-services.

The tool is delivered as a REST service and is intended to be embedded into any website or application that operates on a server, within a cluster, or in the cloud, relying solely on the HTTP protocol. CPEE is described as a toolkit for building custom solutions, rather than a framework-dependent engine. It does not require an internal API or dependencies on specific programming languages or frameworks. This approach allows users to integrate CPEE into diverse environments and tailor it to specific process automation needs.

From a technical perspective, CPEE's core consists of approximately 1,000 lines of code. It is noted for its rapid startup time of less than 10 milliseconds and low memory consumption, using around 35 MiB after startup and often less than 1 MiB per running instance. These characteristics make it suitable for scenarios where resource efficiency and quick deployment are important.
