CHA-Solver

chasolver.org·Entertainment & Media

CHA-Solver is a tool that determines whether a player can be checkmated by any series of legal moves in a given chess position. It addresses the requirements of FIDE Article 6.9 for fair timeout adjudication in chess games. The tool decides with mathematical certainty whether a position is unwinnable, correcting cases where chess servers have historically ruled games incorrectly by treating the problem as computationally intractable.

It supports fair adjudication when a player runs out of time. In such cases the game is drawn if the opponent cannot checkmate the player's king by any possible series of legal moves. CHA-Solver provides an efficient algorithm that implements this rule. The site includes a tutorial, an analyzer for testing positions, an explanation of how the algorithm works, and examples of real games that were adjudicated unfairly.

The project is open source under the MIT license and available as a Rust crate on crates.io. It has been peer-reviewed and presented at FUN 2022. The web interface allows users to try the analyzer directly. Questions and answers cover topics such as the meaning of CHA, how chess servers handle timeouts, interpretation of verdicts, reliability, and potential integration with platforms like Lichess.
